Description of work : In 1839, the Trinity Church's 18th century church building was in need of renovation. Richard Upjohn was hired to inspect and later rebuild the church. Upjohn's initial plans reflected a shift in theological practices within the Evangelical Church, which called for architecture to more closely reflect its purpose. Changes included an open timber ceiling and a larger, differentiated chancel that brought greater focus to the rite of communion. Ultimately, both the ceiling and the chancel were not made according to the original plans. The ceiling was vaulted, and the chancel was built to line up with the nave, a style which aligned with more popular church design. The exterior of the church was built as a 14th-century English Gothic revival in its elevation, and the church introduced the first instance in America of stained-glass windows over the altar.
