Cartagena es una ciudad y municipio español situado junto al mar Mediterráneo en la Región de Murcia. Cuenta con 215.186 habitantes (Ayto 2009), con lo que es la vigesimocuarta ciudad española en población (la sexta entre las que no son capitales de provincia), repartidos en un término municipal de 558,3 km².[1] Se encuentra al sur de la llanura denominada del Campo de Cartagena, comarca con una población total de 332.035 habitantes.
La economía de Cartagena se basó tradicionalmente en la explotación del plomo, plata y zinc de la sierra minera y el sector químico (sulfuro, abonos fosfatados y explosivos). En la actualidad, agotados los filones mineros, Cartagena vive principalmente de la construcción y reparación naval, el refinado de petróleo y la exportación de aceite de oliva, frutas, cítricos, hortalizas, esparto, vino y productos metálicos. Así mismo, es una de las principales bases navales del país, junto con Rota y Ferrol, y un emergente destino turístico gracias a su denso patrimonio artístico, legado de más de 2.500 años de historia.
Cartagena es famosa por sus fiestas mayores de Carthagineses y Romanos y las procesiones de Semana Santa. De su vasto patrimonio monumental destacan el Submarino Peral expuesto en el puerto, el recién restaurado Teatro Romano (el más grande de la península tras el de Mérida), numerosos restos arqueológicos de época carthaginesa y romana, fortalezas, baterías de costa, edificaciones de carácter militar y numerosos edificios modernistas y neoclásicos.
