            There are more than 60 different species of deer in the world.  Deer are the only animals in the world with antlers.  Every year the antlers fall off and regrow, when they do they are covered in velvet which is full of nerves and blood vessels which make antlers the fastest growing tissue in the entire world.  Deer’s mating season is called “the rut.”  During the rut male deer, bucks, fight each other with their antlers over the female deer, or does.  Baby deer, or fawns, have no scent as a natural defense against predators.  They also, have white spots which act as camouflage and help them survive.  Deer can run up to 30 miles per hour and jump as high as 10 feet.  They are also great swimmers.  One type of deer called caribou in North America are also known as reindeer.  Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was created by Robert May for Montgomery Ward department store as a character in a coloring book they gave away to customers in 1939 for Christmas.
