K63 at North Ryde

            27/6/09 - Noise trials with the K-Set trains were conducted on the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link.

Kxx/K63 ran from Hornsby Car Sheds to Epping and through the link to Chatswood and back, twice, for the purpose of measuring noise levels in the passenger and crew compartments to ascertain their suitability for use on the line when the line is integrated into the network.

The main issue with the older silver sets is that they are not sealed like modern, plug door sets. This allows for a far higher noise level in the passenger and crew sections of the train - when the ECRL initially opened in March 2009, these sets were originally banned from the link due to high noise levels. Work has been undertaken to fix this issue, and now testing is being done to ensure the problem will not prove to be an issue in the future.
