Hercules - Herkules - a photo on Flickriver

Today I want so show You something completele different. This is a male rhinoceros beetle Oryctes nasicornis) what I found dead last autumn.
These impressive creatures are living since many years in a quite proper population in my compost heap. It is one of three protected species what are living in my garden. I'm very proud of that.
Every time, when I remove some soil, I'm taking care not to insure any of the animals ore their larvas and to place them safe afterwards. This is taking much longer, but for me it is worth it. Besides that, I try to give them enough resting time, where I don't touch their home at all. This technique seems to work, because I always find many animals in all different stages of thier developmental process.

Heute gibt es mal etwas ganz anderes. Dies ist ein männlicher Nashornkäfer (Oryctes nasicornis), den ich im letzten Herbst tot aufgefunden habe.
Diese beeindruckenden Geschöpfe leben seit vielen Jahren in einer ganz ordentlicher Population in meinem Komposthaufen. Es ist eine von drei geschützten Arten, welche in meinem Garten Leben. Darauf bin ich sehr stolz. Immer wenn ich mir Erde entnehme, achte ich sehr darauf, die Tiere oder ihre Larven nicht zu verletzten und nachher wieder sicher unterzubringen. Das dauert zwar deutlich länger, ist es mir jedoch wert. Außerdem versuche ich Ihnen immer aureichend Ruhephasen zu geben, in denen ich mich überhaupt nicht an Ihrem Wohnsitz vergreife. Diese Technik scheint gut zu funktionieren, denn ich finde immer eine Menge Tiere aus allen Phasen ihres Entwicklungsprozesses.
