The Matterhorn (explored) - a photo on Flickriver

            The Riffelsee is a small mountain lake without an outlet at an altitude of 2770 m above Zermatt at the foot of the Riffelhorn. It lies slightly below the "Rotenboden" station of the Gornergratbahn. If the weather is fine, the eastern face of the Matterhorn is reflected in the Riffelsee or a smaller pond nearby.

It is worthwhile  to hike a few stations downhill from the terminus of the Gornergratbahn.

Der Riffelsee ist ein kleiner, abflussloser Bergsee auf einer Höhe von 2770 m ü. M. oberhalb von Zermatt am Fuß des Riffelhorns im Kanton Wallis. Er liegt etwas unterhalb der Station „Rotenboden“ der Gornergratbahn. Bei gutem Wetter spiegelt sich im Riffelsee die Ostwand des Matterhorns. Dies ist eine kleinere Wasseransammlung in der Nähe.

Es lohnt sich bei gutem Wetter, von der Endstation der Gornergratbahn einige Stationen talwärts zu wandern.
