The Namib takes it all - a photo on Flickriver

            Kolmannskuppe is an abandoned settlement (ghost town) in Namibia. The place is located about ten kilometers east of the port city of Lüderitz. Despite the hostile environment, up to 400 people lived here in its heyday and stately stone houses based on the German model were built. In addition to housing for the workers (separated into married and bachelors), there were administrative and service buildings. The infrastructure included an electricity plant, a hospital (with the first X-ray station in Africa or in the entire southern hemisphere), an ice factory for the production of block ice for the residents' iceboxes, a corner store, a butcher's store, a building called the Ballroom with a theater, gymnasium and commercial kitchen, a bowling alley and a school.

After the town was abandoned, the houses visibly deteriorated and sand piled up meters high in the ruins. The interior furnishings were partially destroyed or taken away. It was not until the 1990s, when Lüderitz also experienced an economic upswing, that more attention was paid to Kolmannskuppe again. Some of the buildings worthy of preservation were restored, rooms were furnished true to the original and gradually an orderly museum operation was set up. Today, the settlement is open to the public in the mornings and guided tours are offered; outside these times, entry is only possible with a photo permit, which must be applied for in advance and for which a fee is charged.

Kolmannskuppe ist eine aufgegebene Siedlung (Geisterstadt) in Namibia. Der Ort liegt ungefähr zehn Kilometer östlich der Hafenstadt Lüderitz. Trotz der lebensfeindlichen Umgebung lebten zu seiner Blütezeit hier bis zu 400 Menschen und es entstanden hochherrschaftliche Steinhäuser nach deutschem Vorbild. Neben Unterkünften für die Arbeiter (getrennt nach Verheirateten und Junggesellen) gab es Verwaltungs- und Dienstgebäude. Zur Infrastruktur gehörten ein Elektrizitätswerk, ein Krankenhaus (mit der ersten Röntgenstation Afrikas bzw. auf der ganzen Südhalbkugel), eine Eisfabrik zur Herstellung von Blockeis für die Eisschränke der Bewohner, ein Tante-Emma-Laden, eine Metzgerei, ein Ballsaal genanntes Gebäude mit Theater, Turnhalle und Großküche, eine Kegelbahn und eine Schule.

Nachdem die Stadt verlassen wurde, verfielen die Häuser zusehends und in den Ruinen häufte sich der Sand meterhoch. Die Inneneinrichtung wurde teilweise zerstört oder mitgenommen. Erst als in den 1990er Jahren auch Lüderitz einen wirtschaftlichen Aufstieg erlebte, widmete man Kolmannskuppe wieder mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Man begann, einige erhaltenswerte Gebäude zu restaurieren, Räume wieder originalgetreu zu möblieren und nach und nach einen geordneten Museumsbetrieb einzurichten. Heute ist die Siedlung vormittags gegen Eintritt zugänglich und es werden Führungen angeboten; außerhalb dieser Zeiten ist ein Betreten nur mit entgeltpflichtigem, vorher zu beantragendem sogenannten Foto-Permit möglich.
