Figln on Sahara dust (explored) - a photo on Flickriver

            The word "Figl" is short for firn gliders. These are short ski-like boards designed for spring snow conditions. Figl were invented and patented by Emo Johann Heinrich from Innsbruck. Little equipment is required for this sport: ankle-high boots and the 60-centimeter-long boards. On the slopes of the Nordkette in particular, you can figl through "firn" and "sulz" when the season in most ski resorts is over. 

The Inntal chain, commonly called the Nordkette because of its location north of Innsbruck, is the southernmost and shortest of the four mountain ranges in the Karwendel. The Nordkette is accessible via the Nordkettenbahn cable car, which offers easy access to the ski area. The terminus is the Hafelekarhaus station (2269 meters above sea level) and this picture was taken just below the terminus. 

At the beginning of April, a large amount of Sahara dust was also transported to Austria and deposited on the thawing snow. As Figln follows old routes, they dig deep into the snow.

Die Inntalkette, wegen ihrer Lage nördlich von Innsbruck allgemein Nordkette genannt, ist der südlichste und kürzeste der vier Gebirgszüge im Karwendel. Die Nordkette ist über die Nordkettenbahn erschlossen, die einen bequemen Zugang zum Skigebiet bietet. Endstation ist die Station Hafelekarhaus (2269 m ü. A.) und dieses Bild entstand kurz unterhalb der Endstation. Anfang April wurde eine größere Menge Saharastaub auch nach Österreich verfrachtet, der sich auf dem tauenden Schnee niederschlug. Da beim Figln alten Routen gefolgt wird, graben sich diese tief in den Schnee ein.
