Stranger #4 - Jean

I met Jean in the early evening of a cloudy June day as I was taking pictures of the Caen town hall, l’Abbaye aux Hommes.

When I told him it was for 100 strangers project, he seemed to know what I was talking about. As it turned out he had already been asked to take part in a 100 strangers project a few years back. Even though I knew which photographer had completed 100 strangers project in Caen and I’d seen the photos a few times, I couldn’t recall Jean’s picture. Whether subconsciously it played a part in my approaching Jean, I couldn’t say.

I asked him to stand in front of the town hall as I thought it would make a nice background even when out of focus which he obligingly agreed to.

Jean was on his way to have a few drinks with friends, he enjoys martial arts, I was curious to learn more about that especially which martial arts and how his interest in martial arts started but I didn’t ask, my thoughts were a little scattered. Jean is passionate about Eastern Europe, especially Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

I felt rusty in the way I approached him and asked questions, there were things he talked about that I wanted to ask more about but didn’t because I was nervous. Likewise, I made a lot of mistakes while taking a few pictures of Jean.

I tend to want to go too fast so as not to bother those who agree to take part in the project, it happened both with Jean and with the second stranger I met that day. Teppo’s advice for those beginning their 100 strangers project was to start in full auto mode, to only focus on asking people until they get used to it. I decided against doing that, I’m more confomrtable shooting in manual exposure mode.

My hurrying the shooting process too much makes my compositions messy and my framing on that day was off, I left way too much headspace.

Next time, I will try to keep in mind that in order to improve, I want to slow down my process, shoot more frames, take more time being careful about how I compose my shots, about the background, about leaving less headspace hopefully making for a less awkward composition. I will try to be careful to follow up on what I’m curious about when talking with strangers. Quite a few mistakes today but I hope I can learn from them.

To end on something a little more positive, I really enjoyed the soft natural light from that cloudy evening.

J’ai rencontré Jean en début de soirée d’un jour nuageux de juin alors que je prenais des photos de l’hôtel de ville de Caen, l’Abbaye aux Hommes.

Quand je lui ai dit que c’était pour le projet 100 strangers, il a eu l’air de savoir ce dont je parlais. Il se trouve qu’on avait déjà demandé à Jean de participer à un projet 100 strangers il y a quelques années. Bien que je connaisse de nom le photographe qui a déjà fait un projet 100 strangers à Caen et que j’ai vu ses photos à plusieurs reprises, je ne me souvenais pas avoir vu la photo de Jean. Est-ce qu’inconsciemment cela a joué dans ma décision d’approcher Jean, je ne saurais dire.

Je lui ai demandé de se tenir devant l’hôtel de ville pensant que cela ferait un arrière plan agréable, même flou.

Jean était en route pour descendre quelques bières avec des amis à lui, il aime les sports de combat, j’étais curieux d’en apprendre plus à ce sujet, notamment quels sports de combat, et de quelle manière il s’y était intéressé mais je ne lui ai pas posé la question, mes pensées étaient un peu éparpillées. Jean s’intéresse également aux pays d’Europe de l’Est, notamment la Pologne, l’Ukraine et la Russie.

Je me suis senti rouillé dans la manière dont j’ai approché Jean et dans ma façon de poser les questions qui me venaient, il y a des choses dont il a parlé au sujet desquelles je voulais lui en demander plus sans oser le faire du fait de ma nervosité. J’ai commis pas mal d’erreurs quand j’ai pris quelques photos de Jean.

J’ai tendance à vouloir aller trop vite pour ne pas déranger ceux qui acceptent de participer au projet, cela est arrivé avec Jean et avec la deuxième inconnue que j’ai prise en photo ce jour-là. Le conseil de Teppo à ceux qui commencent leur projet 100 strangers était de commencer en mode automatique, de se concentrer uniquement sur le fait de demander à un inconnu de prendre sa photo jusqu’à s’habituer au fait d’approcher des inconnus. J’ai décidé de ne pas suivre ce conseil. Je suis plus à l’aise en prenant mes photos en mode exposition manuelle.

Le fait de trop me dépêcher pour prendre les photos a pour conséquence que mes compositions sont brouillonnes, mon cadrage était particulièrement atroce ce jour-là, j’ai laissé beaucoup trop d’espace au dessus de la tête de mes deux inconnus de la journée.

La prochaine fois, j’essaierai de garder à l’esprit qu’afin de m’améliorer, il me faut ralentir, prendre quelques photos de plus, prendre plus mon temps, être plus attentif à la façon dont je compose mes photos, plus attentif à l’arrière plan, plus attentif à laisser moins d’espace au dessus de la tête en espérant que mes compositions en seront moins maladroites. J’essaierai également d’être attentif à poser plus des questions sur les choses qui m’intriguent au sujet des prochains inconnus que je rencontrerai. Pas mal d’erreurs aujourd’hui, mais j’espère que je pourrai apprendre de mes erreurs.

Sur une note plus positive, j’ai beaucoup aimé la lumière douce de ce début de soirée couvert.
