Bete Giyorgis - Lalibela - a photo on Flickriver

My 1:100 LEGO model of the Church of St. George (Bete Giyorgis) in Lalibela, Ethiopia, one of 11 rock-hewn churches built in the 12th and 13th century. These churches were carved right out of the volcanic ground during the Zagwe Dynasty in an effort by King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela to recreate Jerusalem in the Ethiopian Highlands.

The rock-hewn churches in Lalibela have not only remained an important pilgrimmage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians to this day, they were also among the 12 very first sites to be declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1978. This makes it not only an entry for the African Setting category of the Summer Joust 2022 but also a fitting model to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention this year.
