Juvie Eastern Bluebird - a photo on Flickriver

            Our first seasonal brood of bluebirds consisting of five chicks fledged about three weeks ago.  The parents always take them to a nearby creek lined with huge pecan trees.  After awile they will follow the parents to the yard.  Only two are in the yard now.  No way to know the status of the others.  Mortaility in young birds is high, though.  I do what i can to protect the nest from predators and sparrows, but once they fledge, they are on their own.

Mama is currently incubating five more little blue eggs.  Daddy is on guard duty and feeds her in the box.  I put some dried mealworms in a tray feeder as treats for the juvies and they found them immediately.  We've fledged 139 new bluebirds from this nest site. For the first twelve years I kept a journal on every brood, but I think I've learned about all I can from that.  Our beautiful world, pass it on.
