            I have no words for last Friday night. By now you have seen hundreds of Northern Lights pictures and hopefully, you got to see the amazing display in person. This was a once-in-a-generation type of display in lower and middle latitudes. This is not my first G5 storm that I have seen. In fact, the last one in 2003 is what sparked my obsession for the northern lights. I can only assume the G5 storm of 2024 did the same for the next generation of night sky enthusiasts. There were some big differences with this one though. The movement wasn't as rapid compared to the big geomagnetic storms in 2003 and 2004. It also produced a lot more pinks. In fact, I have never seen such a dynamic range of colors in the sky as last Friday night and that was my 39th time in my life seeing the northern lights. 

I drove to Lake Hudson Recreation Area. It is a dark sky park (as it turned out that was not necessary since the aurora was visible in the middle of Toledo). I will never forget stepping out of the vehicle. We were pointed north, but the sky was empty. As I got out, I heard a bunch of screams and excitement that reminded me of the reaction to the total solar eclipse. I was confused until I walked to the back of the vehicle and saw the southern sky light up a couple of minutes before 10pm. My brain froze, I couldn't process what was going on. I just yelled, "Everybody out of the vehicle quick." I have never seen a display briefly shift to the southern sky at this latitude and I knew the lights had to be visible down to Florida. Sure enough, reports show that all 50 states had some type of display show up and even the Caribbean had reports of the northern lights. I will post several more pictures in the days ahead. I am happy with what I got, but honestly, had my brain not froze up, I could have gotten some better images...but then again this was one of those events where taking the picture was less important than soaking up the moment. Oh what a night!
