DEFUNCT PENNSYLVANIA: Grand View Ship Hotel, near Bedford

This unique and much beloved structure first opened in 1932 along what was once busy Route 30 (the Lincoln Highway). A popular stop in the Alleghany Mountains, the Ship also contained a restaurant and a scenic viewing platform. The Pennsylvania Turnpike opened in 1940 diverting traffic off of Route 30. Visitors to the landmark slowly dwindled over the years and by the 1980s the Ship sat derelict along the roadside. It eventually burned down in 2001. Postcard from the 1950s.
