One of my favorite photographers is George Tice. His "Americana" themed images throughout the years have captured the simple beauty of barber shops, gas stations, diners and nature across our country; as well as the majesty of New York as seen from a New Jersey dock or a gargoyle's point of view on the Chrysler Building. But, the series of his that has inspired me the most is his portfolio of the Amish communities of Pennsylvania and the Shakers of Maine--both of its people and their homes.

While staying at my friends' home on the Big Island, I decided to walk out to their lanai one morning to gaze upon Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. But before walking out the door, I immediately saw the potential for a small homage to George Tice... I hope I suceeded.

While post-processing this photo, the song title from Joni Mitchell's "Shadows and Light" kept popping into my head. So, in appreciation of one of my favorite musical artists, I only listened to Joni while working on this photo and named it after her song. There was about 4 hours of post-processing involved in this photo--so thank you for getting me through it Joni!

Anyway, I am certainly going to keep my eye out for more opportunities to capture
"Tice-like" imagery...
