Revenue Cutter Ship Model DALLAS c.1816, Port Profile -Completion, Rex Stewart

The early American coastguard cutter, DALLAS, was a sleek looking vessel of her time. Designed by William Doughty, she was categorized as being one of two ships in the Surprise Class of vessels, the other being the Revenue Cutter SURPRISE.

Both vessels were commissioned as a result of several cutters being lost to the War of 1812. Doughty was contracted during that time to build three classes of cutters ranging from 31, 51, and 79 tons. These unique and fast sailers varied from their original designs, yet carried similiar armament at these measurements.

DALLAS was built in New York at the shipyard of A. & N. Brown. No exact date is given about her launch, but the year recorded is 1816. She was rigged as a topsail schooner of 51 tons. Her deck displacement was 56' 8" inches with a broad beam of 17' feet and a water draft of 6' feet at the bow. Amidship, she carried a 12 pdr. pivoting carronade, a feature that made Doughty famous in the naval maritime.

Stationed at Savannah, GA, in 1816, DALLAS enforced revenue laws and inhibited piracy. She captured two large slavers and a vessel transporting illegally cut timber from the Federal Reserves in East Florida. In December 1821 she was sold out of service.
