Sacred Ground

            One of my favorite spots to hike when we lived further south was this little spot on the Mill Hill Loop Trail at William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge. I was never quite sure why it was so special to me, this pretty little spot of trees covered in moss, it was a young forest and nothing compared to the majesty of our older forests. And it was a fairly small section of trees, but maybe that was part of it, the sudden change from the more open landscape of the reclaimed farmland that comprises the refuge to this moss-covered landscape that absorbed sound and provided a brief respite from the outside world.
