Grosseto è una delle poche città italiane a possedere mura cittadine con una imponenete fortezza sino dalla fine del 1500, mura e fortezza giunte sino a noi dopo 500 anni praticamente intatte. Grosseto è sorta in epoca medievale dopo il progressivo abbandono della città etrusco romana di Rosella e, trovandosi in una pianura facile preda di eserciti e pirati provenienti dalla costa, venne fornita di mura medievali senesi distrutte e poi ricostruite per far posto a queste mura volute da Cosimo I de'Medici e commissionate all'architetto Baldassarre Lanci il quale le ideò nella classica formazione dell'epoca, con bastioni e mura solide. Per realizzare la cerchia muraria di Grosseto occorsero 19 anni, fatte in stile rinascimentale e costruite da numerosi detenuti che vennero prelevati dalle galere locali. Assieme alle mura vennero realizzate due opere murarie imponenti che furono adibite a cisterne d'acqua piovana per rendere autonoma la città specialmente in caso di attacco nemico. La fortezza visibile in questa foto venne eretta sul baluardo omonimo, edificato nella seconda metà del XVI secolo durante i lavori di ricostruzione delle mura, si presenta con una caratteristica forma pentagonale ed è costituito al suo interno da due bastioni secondari rivolti verso il centro storico cittadino, il bastione della Vittoria e il bastione di Santa Lucia; quest'ultimo delimita l'imponente mole del Cassero Senese. Questa intera sezione della cinta muraria, chiamata in passato "Cittadella", ospitò il Distretto Militare dalla metà del XIX secolo fino a tutta la durata della seconda guerra mondiale. Recentemente, è stato completato un restauro dell'intera area che, dopo le opere di riqualificazione, è stata trasformata in un centro culturale ed espositivo, sede di numerose rassegne.
Grosseto is one of the few Italian cities to own city walls with an imposing fortress since the end of 1500, walls and fortress that have come down to us after 500 years practically intact. Grosseto arose in medieval times after the progressive abandonment of the etruscan roman town of Roselle and, being in a plain easy prey for armies and pirates from the coast, it was provided with medieval Sienese walls destroyed and then rebuilt to make place for these walls wanted by Cosimo I de'Medici and commissioned to the architect Baldassarre Lanci who conceived them in the classic formation of the epoque, with solid bastions and walls. It took 19 years to build the walls of Grosseto, made in Renaissance style and built by numerous inmates who were taken from the local galleys. Together with the walls, two impressive masonry works were built which were used as rainwater cisterns to make the city autonomous especially in the event of an enemy attack. The fortress visible in this photo was erected on the bulwark of the same name, built in the second half of the 16th century during the reconstruction of the walls, has a characteristic pentagonal shape and is made up of two secondary bastions facing the historic city center inside. the bastion of Victory and the bastion of St.Lucy; the latter delimits the imposing mass of the Cassero Senese. This entire section of the city walls, formerly called the "Citadel", housed the Military District from the mid-nineteenth century until the duration of the Second World War. Recently, a restoration of the entire area was completed which, after the redevelopment works, was transformed into a cultural and exhibition center, home to numerous exhibitions.
