Elwyn and Sleighton board members would rather not see the school destroyed, but "unfortunately, you also have to consider the fiduciary responsibility to administer the assets to maximize the availability of resources to the charitable purpose," said Lincke.

Substandard conditions at the boarding school made it difficult to attract students and remain financially viable, Lincke said. Philadelphia sent most of the 250 to 300 children who attended Sleighton. Neither Delaware County nor Chester County contracted with the school, he said.

A 2002 Marriott Corp. study found that properly renovating Sleighton’s campus would cost $10 million to $20 million, Lincke said.

Instead, the proceeds from the sale of the property will be used to further the school’s mission of helping truant and delinquent children, he said.
