Every August Bellingham throws a sidewalk chalk art festival, & this year I tried to capture some part of its social meaning. People of all ages & abilities go down to Allied Arts, one of the more important art associations in town, & reserve a numbered sidewalk space. For a fraction of the usual retail price, they are provided with boxes of very good quality chalk. It is not easy to draw on rough concrete. The colors must be rubbed in with one's fingers, often with spit added, & great amounts of chalk dust must frequently be blown away. The pavement is hard, one's fingers get sore quickly, & by midday the sun burns down. But none of this deters anyone, & the show goes on. It's rather like Flickr, but done with sticks of chalk, fingers & spit in the street. It's a social gathering, an event, an entertainment, a tribal ritual & an act of love. It's an endearment. It's our kind - the human kind - at its finest.
