The Lemon

            Over the almost 4 generations since the beginning of The Great Depression, in the wake of which the United States devised & implemented numerous safeguards to lessen the likelihood of a similar recurrence of the consequences of runaway capitalism, the nation's banks & corporations conspired with politicians to undo the safeguards, & undone they were - especially starting with & following the Reagan regime. Various versions of old laissez-faire economic practices were cooked into 'theories' - i.e., propaganda instruments - at 'chairs' in universities, 'think' tanks created & funded by oligarchs & big businesses, repeated by the minute by big media, by Repugnican legislators & most Democrats alike, & we the people came to believe our jobs are created only by rich persons who therefore must not be taxed. We came to believe economic 'libertarianism' & 'neoliberalism' & 'free trade' & 'worldbank' are the most sacred of words, & we voted energetically, even fanatically, for politicians whose service was not to us, but to the banks, corporations & oligarchs.

We voted for the next worldwide economic depression. 

We voted to lose our jobs & homes. 

We voted to lose our privacy, civil rights, & freedom of thought & expression.

We voted for the interminable drug war, the construction of more & more prisons, & for endless international wars. If there is a dollar of profit for Big Daddy Warbucks in a land mine, then let us cover the whole earth with them & then start a second layer. Maybe Big Daddy will buy a candy bar for Little Orphan Annie.

We voted for mobsters running a protection racket for corporations to rule our government, take control of our supreme court & Department of Justice, & be our congresspersons & senators. 

We allowed confidence tricksters to start ministries, & then flocked to listen to their nonsense & enrich them for fooling & fleecing us. 

We voted to borrow trillions from foreign nations,  then the mob gave those trillions to our superrich, who in gratitude said to us, "We cannot create jobs for you if we are taxed to pay the trillions back, so you must pay them back." - In the same moment they closed their factories here, & sent our jobs overseas. 

The poet, William Blake, understood that people do not learn what is enough until they know from experience what is too much.
