This engine is a 1917 Ahrens Fox model K-2 pumper, it was made in Cincinnati, Ohio. The pump which is located on the front of the engine has a 1000-gallon per minute piston pump. The water tank is behind the drivers seat and the steering is on the right hand side of the wagon. The vehicle has a short wheel base to maneuver around the tight city streets. The Baltimore basket, which sits over the hose bed, was a must for all of Baltimore’s early engines up until the 60's. The basket carried brooms, rakes, boots & extra gear in its trough which varied in length. Engine company "31” is one of fifteen pumpers bought by the city of Baltimore during the late teens and early 20's. This wagon saw service in the Waverly section of the city for many years before going to second line status. The unit was restored by the members of Truck Company Number 5 in 1975 and is displayed at the Baltimore City Fire Museum located at 414 N. Gay Street.

The Independent Fire Company house pre-dates the Baltimore City Fire Department, itself. It was the third building erected by this volunteer fire-fighters group to house its equipment, and, in 1858, when the City established a paid Fire Department, the building was purchased for $8,000. It is the only engine house remaining from that era, unchanged, and now houses a fire museum. It is reminiscent of the days when volunteer fire companies reached the peak of their rivalries and helped to give Baltimore its notorious name, “Mobtown.”

Architecturally, the building is of the Italian Gothic style. Its 103 foot campanile, with its clock and series of pointed arches, has long been a familiar landmark to Baltimoreans. It was designed by William H. Reasin and Samuel B. Wetherald. Engine House No. 6 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a city landmark.
