Lake Washington PBM Mariner Recovery Attempt 

After the end of World War II many military aircraft were no longer needed in such large numbers. These planes were scrapped, abandoned, or otherwise forgotten about for decades. When air museums gained popularity in the US in the 1970s and 1980s, many museums or individuals began to restore vintage warbirds. After the easily-transportable abandoned aircraft were found, people started to look for vintage planes in virtually every kind of terrain on Earth: deserts, mountains, swamps, arctic ice, and from under water. 

This wrecked tail section, turret, and hatch door on display come from a US Navy Martin PBM-5 Mariner that sank in Lake Washington, Seattle, on May 6, 1949 after a pontoon float broke off during a strong gust of wind. The crew all made it out safely. 

The aircraft was found by divers in the 1980s, and subject to two unsuccessful salvage attempts by the US Navy in the 1990s. Naval divers removed about 5 feet of lake sediment covering the wings and fuselage prior to the lift, but remaining sediment on the interior cavities of the aircraft made it too heavy for the rigging. The tail section broke off and the rest of the airplane remained at the bottom of the lake.
