Mark 36 Thermonuclear Bomb 

Strategic bombers carried these hydrogen bombs from 1956 to 1962. 

Thermonuclear (fusion) bombs are much more powerful than atomic bombs. Atomic bombs release energy by splitting atoms (fission). Thermonuclear bombs release many times more energy by combining atoms (fusion). Thermonuclear bombs have atomic bombs inside to trigger the fusion reaction. 

The Mark 36 weighs almost nine tons, and could only be carried by large bombers like the Convair B-36, Boeing B-47, Boeing B-52, or Convair B-58. The bombs used parachutes to slow their fall, allowing the bomber more time to escape the nuclear explosion.
