The Mark 7 "Thor," initially produced in 1952, was the first tactical nuclear bomb adopted by the US armed forces that could be carried by Air Force and Navy fighter aircraft. Although it was carried externally by fighters (F-84, F-100 and F-101), it could also be carried internally by bombers such as the B-57. Because of the lack of ground clearance when hung under a fighter, the Mk-7 had a lower fin that was stowed in a retracted position on the ground and was extended once the carrier fighter was in the air.

The Mark 7 was a capsule-type weapon with fissionable elements (uranium 235) stored in a separate container. The Mark 7 tactical nuclear weapon used a new delivery method, the Low Altitude Bombing System (LABS). With LABS, the pilot flies their aircraft toward an "initial point," then commences a "4G" climb, and releases the bomb at a designated point in the climb. By the time the bomb detonates, the pilot and aircraft are a safe distance away.

The Mark 7 warhead (W7) also formed the basis of the 30.5 inch BOAR rocket, the Mark 90 Betty nuclear depth charge, and MGM-5 Corporal and MGR-1 Honest John ballistic missiles. It was also supplied to Great Britain for delivery by Royal Air Force Canberra aircraft assigned to NATO in Germany.

The Mark 7 was deployed in more models and served for a greater length of time than any other atomic weapon in the U.S. arsenal. It was in service from 1952 to 1968 with 1700-1800 examples being built.
