ca. 1624 - 'knight Jan van Lathem, Lord of Liefkenrode (+1618) & Magdalena de Haynin (+1624)', Arme Klarenkapel, Mechelen, Stadhuis, Mechelen, province of Antwerp, Belgium

            Knight Jan van Lathem (+1618), 'schout' (bailiff) of the Brabantine city of Mechelen, wears the typical heraldic surcoat/tabard, which is often depicted in 16th/17th century knightly church monuments in the Southern Low Countries.
The original location of this slightly weathered incised slab, the early 16th century gothic Chapel of the Poor Clares in Mechelen, is now part of the Scheppersinstituut.
Note the fairly outdated costume of the couple, e.g. the small ruffs.
The monument has been relocated to the inner court of the Mechelen city hall.

The inscription reads:
'Hier leet begraven Jan van Lathem, ridder, heer van Liefkenrode, schouteet van Mechelen, gestorven den 20 december 1618. En vrouwe Magdelena De Haynin, syne huysvrouwe, die overleden is den 26 may 1624. Bidt voor de ziele'
(Here lies buried Jan van Lathem, knight, Lord of Liefkenrode, bailiff of Mechelen, who died 20 December 1618. And Lady Magdalena De Haynin, his housewife, who died 26 May 1624. Pray for their souls.)
