1332 + 1341 - 'personal drawing based on two seals of Jan III, duke of Brabant and Limburg', Stadsarchief, Leuven, province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium

            I recreated the armour and dress as seen on the almost identical seals of 1332 and 1341 of duke Jan III of Brabant (°ca. 1300 - +1355), with Dutch terminology.

John III, duke of Brabant is shown as an archetypical early 14th century knight in full panoply, wearing a great helm, ailettes, hauberk, surcoat, shield and banner. The ovoid great helm is surmounted by a crest consisting of two shutters around a wyvern, to which is attached a mantle. The wyvern crest is also worn on the horse’s head.
Note the gambeson protruding in two parts from under the hauberk.

More plate armour would have certainly been worn by the 1330s, but very often seals enjoyed quite a long lifespan before being replaced by a newer design.
On the other hand, the depiction of older armour could have been a symbol of stability, a feature that can also be seen in many early 14th century French princely effigies.
