Torlonia Relief - Harbor Scene - Portus Augusti

            A votive relief in Pentelic marble found in 1864 (or 1863) on the grounds of the Torlonia villa that stood on the north side of Trajan's harbor (Portus) just up the coast from Ostia.
Dated stylistically to ca. 200 CE (Severan period).
Two ships fill the foreground, one with furled sails and one under sail.  The "V" on the mainsail probably refers to "Votum" - that is, the relief is dedicatory and votive in nature.  The lighthouse in the background may represent the structure that stood in the Claudian harbor next to Trajan's new harbor project.  The flame at the peak still bears traces of paint. The standing female figure in the upper left corner also wears a lighthouse-shaped crown. She is perhaps a personification of the settlement at Portus (similar to a hellenistic-period "Tyche" figure). The semi-clad "genius" of the harbor itself, stands on the right with a cornucopia. There are many other wonderful details: a quadriga pulled by elephants, the captain (and his wife?) making sacrifice from the deck of the ship to the left, amphorae being offloaded on the lower right, and the apotropaic eye to protect the ships from bad fortune.
The relief has finally been exhibited for public view in the Capitoline museums of Rome in 2021.
