Roman Sarcophagus - Calydonian Boar Hunt

            Roman Sarcophagus in the gardens of the Scavi of Ostia Antica (behind the modern bar and gift shop). The right side of the sarcophagus shows the myth of the Calydonian boar hunt.  The hero Meleager attacks the boar with a long spear. In the middle of the group Atalanta is represented, with the garb of the goddess Artemis - she is pulling an arrow from a quiver on her back and holding a bow in her left hand. This is a rather crudely-rendered parallel example of a sarcophagus in the Capitoline museums that shows virtually the same scene (third century, Inv. Scu 917).  Here the extensive use of the running drill also points to a late third-century CE date.
