Baldachin Altar - a photo on Flickriver

Baldachin Altar

            This is the interior of the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.  It is the largest Roman Catholic church in North America, and among the ten largest churches in the world.  It is seen here with Christmas decorations.

Just visible to the left  is the "Christ in Majesty" mosaic in the north apse (it covers  3,610 square feet).  

The baldachin canopy (center)  is 46 feet tall.  The blue mosaic above it is titled "Triumph of the Lamb" and covers 3,340 square feet.

The golden dome visible on the right edge of the photo is the east apse with its 3,570 square foot mosaic.

I'm not Catholic, but the scale and beauty of the art work in this church is absolutely stunning.
