Greater Scaup ♂ Aythya marila - a photo on Flickriver

            Far from the sea… The long-staying first-winter drake Greater Scaup still associating with Tufted Ducks at the Slimbridge wetlands centre in Gloucestershire today. Males have black heads, shoulder and breast, white flanks, grey back and a black tail. It's the grey back which singles them out.

Only a handful breed in the UK every year, making them our rarest breeding ducks.
