Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant Rutland,VT

            Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant located at 401 U.S. Route 7 (South) in Rutland,VT.  The motor lodge is currently branded as a Days Inn while the restaurant is currently occupied by a Denny's.  The restaurant opened for business on February 19th 1957 with the motor lodge opening on May 15th 1964.  The HJ Restaurant operated for 35 years before closing abruptly on January 1st 1992.  In November 1992 a Denny's Restaurant had opened in the former Howard Johnson's.  The motor lodge continued to carry the HJ name until May 2002 at which point the property was rebranded as a Red Roof Inn.  Despite the rather poor reputation of Red Roof Inns this property was exceptionally well maintained during my visit in July 2010.  Its worth noting the gate lodge is still standing, however it was "squared off" and decapitated of its cupola and weather-vane in the early 1990s.
Note the Howard Johnson's Restaurant underwent a $500,000 renovation in 1986 which "modernized" the facility.  Ironically as part of the remodel the iconic "Simple Simon" weathervane was removed although the orange roof remained until 1992. 
Its also worth noting the motor lodge originally offered an outdoor pool which being located in Vermont had very limited use.  By the late 1970s the pool had been filled in to make way for an enclosed pool area which is still in use as of August 2022.
