Raven's Lair Under The Light of Perpetual Beauty on The Turnagain Arm, Alaska. 12/16-2013 - 1:20 PM

On the short days of Winter in Alaska the sunrise blends into the sunset when the days aren't much more than 5 hours long around the Anchorage area. On this particular day the sun rose in the morning and rode along the top of the ridge all day until it faded behind and under them to drop below the horizon. You are actually shooting under sweet light conditions all day long. On this day we also had a beautiful misty fog and these delicate little snow flakes that would just appear from the sky miraculously without a cloud. It really did make for some very nice shooting that day.

If you look close at the water you will notice that it is all ice in various shapes and sizes. They all flow together into a single mass that moves as a whole and yet independently. From a slush to flat ice islands the size of a football field. They all move around and crash into each other as they move with the current. The Turnagain Arm is an arm of the Cook Inlet in the Gulf of Alaska and is affected by the tide and so the ice flows in and out of the channel. It's quite as sight as it gives the river a feeling of life as if it's a living and moving thing.

Darlene and I drove up to this location and looked around for a view. We wandered around and found this little alcove that was occupied by these huge Alaskan ravens that would swoop back and forth past the opening to this beautiful scene. This is showing the afternoon sun cresting the top of the Kenai Mountains on the right with the Chugach Mountains to the left side.

This was an incredible scene to experience.
