Opposing Forces

            Red hot flowing lava pushes relentlessly toward the ocean as its waters fight against a losing battle. They end up working together to build new land, all while the ocean knows it will win in the end.

This is a photo of the lava as it enters the ocean on the Big Island of Hawaii. Even though you would think that the most dangerous part would be stepping on some molten rock most people hurt themselves by slipping and falling. It's very slippery when it's wet plus it cuts like glass if you fall on a sharp piece.

As far as walking on hot stuff. We crossed over this particular lava flow above where it's flowing into the ocean. It was hardened but was very hot. Plus you could see a red glow from the cracks. Very creepy. But we were careful to choose a solid route.

And then once you get to the ocean entry you must be very careful not to stand on a shelf that may break off and crash into the ocean. The lava and water creates sand and then the flow will over lay the sand. The ocean then undermines the shelf by washing out the sand under it and then CRASH into the sea it goes.

This is the second time to the lava for me and so I had a good idea of what to expect, but being with Bruce Omori who lives there was reassuring.
