DSLR vs. Sony RX10 III, part 2 - a photo on Flickriver

The Canon image is a very pleasing and professional looking, with good colors, contrast, sharpness and details. The image has had no post-processing other than my standard RAW conversion and JPEG export in LightRoom. Noting to complain about. But it is hard to claim it is any better than the Sony RX10 III image.

The Canon 1DX II with the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 Mark II lens is a potent combination, the best 35mm full-frame system today for hand-held action and wildlife photography. It slightly edges out the Nikon D5 with either the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 or the Nikon 200-500mm, which is also an excellent system in its own right.

The not so good news for Canon and Nikon shooters is, Sony is coming. Although the RX10 III has only a tiny 1" sensor with a huge 2.7x crop factor, and only 12-bit / pixel of dynamic range, in good lighting, it can give any DSLR a run for its money.

Maybe there is a difference in print quality, I don't know. But for online viewing, it is tough to argue the Canon image here is any better than the Sony image.

As of March 2017, The Sony RX10 III costs US$1600, compared to $8200 for a Canon 1DX II + Canon 100-400mm II lens, and $8800 for Nikon D5 + Nikon 80-400mm lens, or $7900 for a Nikon D5 + Nikon 200-500mm lens.

Of course, the Sony RX10 III has nowhere near the competence of the Canon 1DX II or Nikon D5 when it comes to the speed or accuracy of autofocusing, tracking, frame rates, etc. But the Canon and Nikon should be scared that Sony has all such technology of its own (all you have to do is see the A99-II), and can put all of it into a future RX10 camera.

A Sony RX10 camera with super fast autofocusing and tracking, large buffer size for continued shooting, a fast processor, and a high frame rate, packaged in a rugged, weather-sealed body and lens housing would have the ability to dramatically change the market for sports, wildlife and action photography.
