Windmill Hill - a photo on Flickriver

Windmill Hill

            Windmill Hill saw the first action on March 28, the third day of the Battle of Glorieta Pass, New Mexico.

Rebel and Federal forces met here.  The Union troops retreated in good order from here to Artillery Hill and then kept being forced back slowly all day.

The battle would have been a tactical Confederate victory - but a group of Union troops slipped behind the Rebs and destroyed the Confederate supply train in Apache Canyon. Without supplies, the Confederates retreated back down the Rio Grande Valley to Texas.
