Schloss Pottendorf / Pottendorf Castle

            Diese Ansicht zeigt die Apsis der renovierten Kapelle von Schloss Pottendorf, während das sonstige Schloss immer noch eine Ruine mit einem gewissen morbiden Charme ist. An der Grenze zwischen Niederösterreich und dem nördlichen Burgenland liegt Pottendorf. Dort baute das Adelsgeschlecht der Pottendorfer im 12. Jahrhundert ein Schloss und umgab es mit einem grossen Park. Bis zur Jahrtausendwende existierte das Schloss mit wechselnden Besitzern, zuletzt der Fürstenfamilie Esterházy. In den letzten Tagen des 2. Weltkriegs erlitt das Schloss Bombentreffer, von denen es sich bis heute nicht mehr erholte und zusehends zur Ruine verfiel. Doch in den letzten 15 Jahren wurden zumindest der Park und die Kapelle durch die Gemeinde Pottendorf wieder hergestellt, wodurch das Areal heute ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel für Spaziergänger geworden ist.

This view shows the apse of the renovated chapel of Pottendorf Castle, while the rest of the castle is still a ruin with a certain morbid charm. Pottendorf lies on the border between Lower Austria and northern Burgenland. The noble Pottendorf family built a castle there in the 12th century and surrounded it with a large park. The castle existed until the turn of the millennium with changing owners, most recently the Esterházy princely family. In the final days of the Second World War, the castle was hit by bombs, from which it has never recovered and has increasingly fallen into ruin. However, in the last 15 years, at least the park and the chapel have been restored by the municipality of Pottendorf, making the area a popular destination for walkers today.
