            Headframe at the Minnie Pump Shaft. The shaft served the famous A. Y. and Minnie Mines. This is where it all began for one of the great American fortunes, that of the Guggenheim family. Meyer Guggenheim, patriarch of the family, bought shares in the A.Y. and Minnie Mine in 1880 from their discoverers, A. Y. Gorman and his wife, Minnie. The operations here, which began in 1883, were consolidated with the adjacent Sellers Mine. These two mines tapped an exceptionally large and rich ore body. The fabulous profits from these mines allowed Guggenheim to buy up other claims in the area and to establish smelting and refining facilities in Colorado. Guggenheim's sons expanded the family's industrial empire into other mining districts around the country. Iron Hill. Leadville Mining District. Lake Co., Colo.
