Stanislaus Table Mountain / Inverted Topography

            Stanislaus Table Mountain, a long sinuous feature extending 50 miles  from Sonora Pass down the west flank of the Sierra to Knights Ferry, is an example of inverted topography. During Miocene time, beginning about 26 million years ago, volcanos in the Sierra produced a large volume of ash and other pyroclastic material that was deposited on the western side of the range. As uplift of the Sierra continued, rivers cut deep channels into these volcanic sediments. In Pliocene time, about 9 million years ago, an eruption in the Dardanelles area extruded a stream of lava that flowed down one of those ancient rivers. Since then, much of the volcanic sediment has been removed by erosion. The harder, more resistant lava flow gradually became the highest part of the landscape as the softer sediments around it were removed. Today, the lava that once filled the lowest parts of the river channel forms this table mountain -- hence the inverted topography. The dark ridge here -- the river of lava -- is the Stanislaus Formation. The grassland in the foreground covers the Valley Springs Formation, composed of ash and volcanic sediments.
