The Gray Ghost

            This aircraft has been redone in the colours of Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray. He was the last awardee of the Victoria Cross. The highest honour that can be bestowed upon a member of the military in the Commonwealth."

Flying through heavy anti-aircraft fire from shore batteries, and at least eight warships, Gray managed to close to within 50 feet of a Japanese destroyer scoring a direct hit with at least one of his bombs. It sunk as the burning Corsair crashed into the bay, taking Gray with it.

The stunning achievement earned Gray a memorial near Parliament Hill in Ottawa, along with one in Onagawa Wan. It made him the only member of a foreign military to be so honoured by Japan.
