"Lobiger serradifalci" - a photo on Flickriver

            Conocido como Caracol burbuja verde lobiger, esta es la especie que habita en el Mediterráneo,  este molusco opistobranquio se encuentra sobre sustratos blandos (arenas y fangos) con praderas extensas de Caulerpa prolifera, de la cual se alimenta. 

Los opistobranquios del género Sacoglosos mediterráneos Lobiger serradifalci y Oxynoe olivacea se utilizaron como control biológico contra el alga invasora Caulerpa taxifolia que cubrió parte de los fondos Mediterráneos hace unas décadas. Estos moluscos se adaptaron perfectamente a su nuevo alimento.

Sin embargo, en lugar de ayudar a controlar la propagación de esta alga introducida, de hecho puede estar acelerando su propagación. En el Mediterráneo, al menos, C. taxifolia se reproduce vegetativamente, por pequeñas piezas que se desprenden y crecen en nuevas plantas. Desafortunadamente, Lobiger serradifalci se alimenta perforando agujeros en la pared celular, lo que debilita la planta y permite que las piezas se rompan, acelerando así la propagación de las algas.

¡Desafortunadamente nada es simple!

Known as the green bubble snail lobiger, this is the species that inhabits the Mediterranean. This opisthobranch mollusc is found on soft substrates (sands and muds) with extensive meadows of Caulerpa prolifera, on which it feeds. 

The Mediterranean opisthobranchs of the Sacoglossus genus Lobiger serradifalci and Oxynoe olivacea were used as a biological control against the invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia that covered part of the Mediterranean seabed a few decades ago. These molluscs adapted perfectly to their new food.

However, instead of helping to control the spread of this introduced algae, it may actually be accelerating its spread. In the Mediterranean, at least, C. taxifolia reproduces vegetatively, by small pieces that break off and grow into new plants. Unfortunately, Lobiger serradifalci feeds by punching holes in the cell wall, which weakens the plant and allows the pieces to break off, thus accelerating the spread of the algae.

Unfortunately nothing is simple!
