1956 VOLVO PV444 Type K Fastback

            As we left town I suddenly had no pressure on the clutch pedal. I knew immediately what was going on. I let the 1985 Ford Transit camper van roll out because I could no longer shift gears. Suddenly I saw a side road to the left and turned the wheel between two cars, so I could come to a stop as far as possible from the provincial road. We just had to spend the night there. Because it was Friday evening, we had to wait until the car parts store in Sala was open again.
In the beginning we were viewed with suspicion by local residents. After a day the ice broke and I contacted Gunnar, a tough Swede who was willing to take me to the town. Swedes can be very private, but when they know who they are dealing with they are very cordial.
On the following Monday we were finally able to buy a new clutch cable. I immediately put it in and we could continue our journey that same day. At Gunnar we were allowed to wash our hands. It then turned out that he was the owner of this beautiful PV444. His family was the first owner.

In 1942 Volvo decided to develop an economical low prized family car. Engineers Helmer Petterson (Sweden, 1901-1980) and Erik Jern (Sweden, 1904-1949) were involved with the (technical) design.
This new Volvo was called PV444: PV stands for Person Vagn, and the number code: 4 seats, 4 stroke engine, 4 cylinders.

In 1944 the prototype was ready. In September 1944 it was shown to the public for the first time. The reactions were very positive and many cars were ordered. The first cars were not for sale until 1947.
Some characteristics for the very first model years: one-piece bumper bar, grille with horizontal strips, split front and rear window. The design was based on the latest American car fashion trends.
PV444 Type K was the first model with the new grille, which was also used on the later PV544.
