Greenland Fog Iceberg Study I - a photo on Flickriver

This is the first image of three that I'll show that was taken on our first night in Greenland. We were supposed to arrive the day before, but heavy fog caused our flight from Iceland to be cancelled. Some of that fog hung on until the next day and into the evening when we went out for our first shoot. I loved this night – it was probably my favourite of the trip. It was so eerie to move slowly through the ice field and to have icebergs and bergy bits appear silently out of the fog. As the evening went on, the fog got thicker and thicker (as you’ll see in the images I’ll show) until we couldn’t really see much at all and had to turn around to go back to port.

Technically this is not an iceberg. To be classified as an iceberg, according to NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association), "the height of the ice must be greater than 16 feet above sea level and the thickness must be 98-164 feet and the ice must cover an area of at least 5,382 square feet". What you see in this image is what's called a 'bergy bit' whose “height is generally greater than three feet but less than 16 feet above sea level and its area is normally about 1,076-3,229 square feet". Even smaller bits of ice are called growlers, and we saw lots of those, in beautiful patterns on that lovely night.
