The Eastern part of the Sierra Nevada mountains is often less traveled but gorgeous to photograph and is one of my favorite places on planet earth. But the characteristic wind that makes it a fantastic landscape photography destination also makes it challenging to venture out, especially in winter. On our recent trip, except for the first day, we had consistent wind, and combined with the sudden drop in temps made it difficult to venture out to photograph.

But on our last day there, I had found a new spot, and no amount of cold would stop me from getting out in the morning. Fortunately, there were about 30 minutes of perfect stillness at sunrise, and I was able to get some gorgeous morning shots of the mountain. There were fluffy clouds in the sky, and with the warm morning light on them, the place looked like paradise. It didn’t last, though. Once the wind started to pick up, it whipped the clouds around, creating uniques shapes in the morning sky. Unfortunately, the wind also began to pull in massives layers of clouds over the mountain. And with, an hour or so after the sunrise, I was looking at an overcast sky. It stayed that way till evening, but I was happy to go out and shoot that day and capture the small window of stunning light.
