There is an interesting story here...

            Last year, I posted a photo of Grave Creek Bridge located right off Interstate 5 in Oregon. The story behind its name began in the fall of 1846 when the Applegate wagon train from Fort Hall, Idaho - the first to travel the southern route to the Willamette Valley - camped on the north side of what was then called Woodpile Creek. Martha Leland Crowley, a 16-year-old member of that train, died of typhoid fever and was buried near a white oak tree just north of where, in 1920, the covered bridge would be built. The creek was renamed Grave Creek in commemoration of that single interment. It is my understanding that the oak tree was removed so a paved roadway could be laid leading to the covered bridge, leaving Martha's once bucolic grave, now covered in faded, plastic flowers, in a rain-soaked gully immediately below the edge of the road - a poignant oddity.
