Babirusa- pigs with those mighty horns

            I am in the Bali Safari, on a safari tram/ bus ride as part of my ticket price, which was indeed heavenly in that heat. One of the first animals we saw on the ride was the weird looking Babirusa. I had seen this animal up close for the first time in the Singapore zoo way back in 2009, and this was my second sighting, albeit not a very clear one as the animals were resting in the mid day heat. The Babirusa, also known as a deer-pig is a genus, Babyrousa, in the swine family. The species is mostly found in Wallacea, or specifically on the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi, Togian, Sula and Buru. The upper canines of male Babirusa emerge vertically from the alveolar process, penetrating though the skin and curving backward over the front of the face and towards the forehead.
