            Approaching the Grisheshwar temple near the Ellora caves near Aurangabad, Maharashtra. I did not visit the Grishneshwar temple though, disgusted by the surging crowds fighting to get in. But for the fact that I am not too religious and not a fan of temples, the sheer onslaught of vendors peddling religious doo dads was off putting enough to make be abandon all plans of entering the temple itself. Add to that a long line for entry tickets, and people fighting to get in at the half closed collapsible gates- it resembled people trying to scramble onto a local commuter train in Bombay during rush hour. I turned back in disgust. Photography would not be allowed inside the temple anyway. For the believers, Grishneshwar  is actually a very important temple, as it is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India. Referred to sometimes as the Ghrneshwar or Ghushmeshwar Temple, this is one of the shrines dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and  is mentioned in the Shiva Purana. The word Ghrneshwara means lord of compassion. The main idol inside is the Lingam- the Hindu phallic symbol which is believed to be a symbol of Shiva. All that scaffolding was another thing that put me off- rather than leave the temple in it's ancient glory, they are about to paint it in playground livery, an unfortunate feature nowadays of most ancient temples all over india.
