ABBAZIA DI SESTO AL REGHENA (PN) - a photo on Flickriver

L'Abbazia di S. Maria in Sylvis (così denominata perchè allora immersa in una estesa selva, dal latino "silva") venne fondata intorno alla prima metà dell’ VIII sec.; nel 762 ricevette la donazione di tre nobili longobardi Erfo, Marco e Anto alla quale seguirono numerose altre. Nell'899 subì la devastante invasione degli Ungheri che la distrusse quasi completamente, ma tra il 960 e il 965 l’abate Adalberto II iniziò l'opera di ricostruzione e l'abbazia accrebbe la sua potenza non solo sul piano religioso, ma anche civile, tanto da assumere l'aspetto di castello medioevale con il suo sistema difensivo formato da torri e fossati. Con il diploma del 967 Ottone I donò al Patriarcato di Aquileia l'Abbazia di Sesto che più tardi, nel 1420, passò sotto la dominazione della Repubblica Veneta che la affidò, nel 1441, a prelati secolari che non vi risiedevano. Soppressa la Commenda, i beni e le proprietà dell'abbazia vennero messe all'asta. Dopo varie vicende la giurisdizione religiosa passò alla diocesi di Concordia (1818) e nel 1921 la Santa Sede le riconobbe di nuovo il titolo di "Abbazia".
