Nikkor 200mm f/4 Ai - Instruction Manual

            This ‘AI’ lens is identified by the the following: the f32 in yellow paint and the f16 in white paint.

The Nikkor 200mm f/4 is a fully automatic medium telephoto lens with an optical construction of 5 elements in 5 groups. The lens compact size (just 126mm long) and light weight (only 540g) make the unit especially attractive for hand-held shooting, and the fully automatic diaphragm enables full aperture viewing for focusing/composing ease. To further enhance the high optical performance of this lens. Nikon Integrated Coating is applied to air-to-glass lens surfaces. NIC reduces the flare and ghost resulting from power-full light sources within the picture angle of the lens, resulting in improved image contrast and outstanding colour rendition when using colour film. The lens offers “automatic maximum aperture indexing” (AI) with suitably-equipped cameras, via the meter coupling ridge provided. The ridge and the auto diaphragm function together to permit full aperture exposure measurement, the lens is also fitted with a meter coupling shoe to permit the same operation with Nikon cameras which lack the AI facility. An “aperture-direct-readout” scale is engraved on the lens to allow direct reading of the aperture setting in suitably-equipped finders. Minimum focusing distance with this lens is 2m (7 ft): the attachment size is 52mm.
NOTE: When using the lens with a non-AI cameras, conventional “manual”  maximum aperture indexing is required.

Recommended Focus Screens
Nineteen different interchangeable focusing screens are available for F and F2 Nikon cameras to suit any type of lens or picture-taking situation. Those which are recommended for use with this Nikkor 200mm f/4 lens are listed below

0 = Acceptable focusing
Slight vignetting (or moire phenomenon, in the case of the micro-prism) affects the screen image. The image on the film, however shows no trace of this.

Note: Light transmission properties vary somewhat with focusing screen type, this occasionally requiring exposure correction tp compensate for the combined effects of the lens/screen/camera combination in use. *The numbers listed in certain columns of the combination table at the lower left (e.g., -½, -1, etc.) denote the amount of correction necessary in f/stops. To adjust the camera’s Photomic finder for the indicated f/stop correction, lift and turn the film speed index ring until the ASA value for the film in use is aligned with the appropriate mark engraved on the ring. In the example figure shown, ASA 100  is aligned with the -1½  mark to provide the correction required when using the Type G2 screen with a Photomic finder-equipped Nikon F2 camera and mounted Nikkor 200mm f/4 lens.

Lens care
Always keep the lens surfaces clean, as dust or smudges can interfere with the image sharpness. Use a soft brush - never cloth or tissue - to remove dust. Stubborn smudges should be wiped with lens tissue moistened with alcohol or lens cleaner.  

To protect the lens surface from dirt or damage, the use of a UV filter is recommended at all times. The lens hood also helps to protect the lens.

Keep the lens hood cap in place whenever the lens is not in use.

Attach both the front and rear caps when the lens is stored separately.

To ensure proper fit of the lens when stored in the leather lens case, set the Len’s focusing ring to infinity (∞) setting and fully retract the lens hood
