            Ely Cathedral, Ely, Cambridgeshire. 

Painted Nave Roof (bays 2-8)

The six westernmost bays of the nave were by Henry Styleman Le Strange, of Hunstanton who started work in 1858. The remainder of  the bays were painted by Thomas Gambier Parry, of Highnam, Gloucestershire who took over on the death of Le Strange in1862.

The six subjects completed by Mr. Le Strange, beginning at the west end of the nave, are 

1)  Creation of Adam. 
2)  The Fall of Man. 
3)  Noah and the Flood
4)  Abraham and Isaac 
5)  The Vision of Jacob's Ladder. 
6)  The Marriage of Boaz and Ruth

The six remaining bays are:

7)  The Branch from Jesse
8)  King David
9)  The Annunciation 
10) The Nativity
11)  The Adoration of the Sheherds and the Magi
12) Christ on Glory

24 prophets and worthies,  two in each bay, hold scrolls inscribed with their respective prophecies of the coming of our Lord.

Along either side of the ceiling is a line of busts, showing the generations of our Lord back to Adam, according to the Gospel of St. Luke.
