Moth Cocoon (Zygaenidae), Singapore - a photo on Flickriver

            Seeing A Pink Cocoon For The First Time -
I collected the orange caterpillar from the forest and finally saw the head extending from the fleshy thorax during feeding. Initially, I thought the stout larva was a slug caterpillar with suckers underneath but the crotchets on his prolegs gave a clue. The caterpillar remained immotile on his last day and displayed signs of pupation, swaying his head sideways at night. When I woke up the next morning, a reddish pink coating was seen on the mid-vein of the dorsal surface. I ran my fingers gently around the elliptical cocoon and was amazed at how well the worm sealed his nursery chamber. Let’s see what it is in due time.
